Members of the Partners for After School Success (PASS) AmeriCorps program serve at host sites in Dane County, Wisconsin, including:
The Bayview Community Center is nestled within a multicultural affordable housing development in downtown Madison that serves families from over ten countries. PASS AmeriCorps members will support youth grades 4-12 in Bayview's after school programs and through one on one tutoring at Hamilton Middle School. Working closely with program staff, members will provide academic and social-emotional support in after school programs, plan and implement educational and recreational programming and support guest facilitators in arts and healthy lifestyle activities. Programming includes Bayview’s Youth Council, healthy cooking club, teen night, and CAMP (College and Career Mentorship Program) Bayview.
Bridge Lake Point Waunona Neighborhood Center
AmeriCorps members plan and deliver educational and recreational programming to children and youth at this south Madison host site. Members co-facilitate middle and high school academic and youth enrichment programs, including the Girl Neighborhood Power, Teen Program, Homework Club, and Power Hours. In addition to youth programming, members tutor five students in literacy at the neighborhood middle school, mentor students, and engage youth in community service activities. PASS members serving at BLW are an integral part of the team providing a safe and fun experience for children after school.
Elver Park Neighborhood Center
PASS AmeriCorps members serving at Elver Park Neighborhood Center will provide literacy tutoring to at least 5 students at a Madison or Middleton middle school, coordinate the Center homework club, mentor youth participants and provide engaging extended learning programming for 15-20 southwest Madison middle and high school youth in the center after school and summer programs. Responsibilities include working with center staff to plan and implement youth volunteer service projects and youth center events. Members will have a rich experience in youth work, tutoring, and community networking at Wisconsin Youth Center by serving with an experienced supervisor and staff committed to impacting the community.
Kennedy Heights Community Center
Our center is located in the heart of one of Madison's most diverse low-income neighborhoods. PASS AmeriCorps members will support, plan, and implement positive youth development programming for youth in 5th–9th grades. This may include facilitating academic support programs, coordinating service and leadership programming, gender-specific programming, art, STEM, and recreational programming. The members' duties include one-on-one literacy tutoring at the local middle school during the school day. Members are an important part of our small staff team and participate in decision making and helping every family to thrive. Kennedy Heights is located on Madison's north side.
Lussier Community Education Center
At LCEC, AmeriCorps members will plan and implement activities for middle school youth through the Youth Resource Center and for high school youth through the Teen Build Up program. Services focus on educational achievement, personal and leadership development, community service, arts, and healthy lifestyles through recreation and nutrition. Members will serve youth individually, in small and large groups. Members provide school engagement support at Jefferson middle school or Memorial high school. Lussier Community Education Center is a well-established resource on Madison's west side serving a high percentage of African American youth from low-income families.
The Middleton Youth Center serves 5th to 8th-grade students in a community just west of Madison. The PASS AmeriCorps member will provide one-on-one literacy tutoring to five students at Kromrey Middle School. Members will help coordinate our homework help program, plan and lead enrichment activities focused on social-emotional learning, and involve students in service-learning opportunities. As a new program, we are excited to involve the PASS member in the development of new program opportunities including a weekly Girls Group and increasing the capacity and effectiveness of the homework help program. Members will have an opportunity to integrate their interests and talents to the program development process. PASS AmeriCorps members join a dedicated team of staff and volunteers to help deliver a variety of programs and services to a vibrant and diverse Oregon community. AmeriCorps members gain experience mentoring, team building, gardening, planning community service projects and serving youth. Members gain knowledge about positive youth development and non-profit management. PASS AmeriCorps members will assist in the programming and implementation of programs to students participating in the Oregon Youth Center, Inc. (OYC) Program.
Urban League of Greater Madison (ULGM)
The PASS AmeriCorps member enhances the academic achievement, college readiness, and career development programs offered by the ULGM. These programs include Schools of Hope Middle School Tutoring Program, the 21st Century Careers Program, and Project REACH. Members will tutor at least 8 middle school youth in literacy; assist with the recruitment, screening, training, and placement of adult volunteer tutors; and help design and implement career and college exploration activities. During the summer, the member will aid in the organization and administration of a 7-week long first employment internship program for students entering the 9th grade. Members serve primarily at Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie during the school year and at the Urban League of Greater Madison during the summer.
Vera Court Neighborhood Center
AmeriCorps members will tutor students in literacy throughout the school day at either Black Hawk or Sherman Middle Schools. During the afternoon and early evening hours, members will serve as a co-leader for the Girl Neighborhood Power program, facilitating discussions and planning filed trips around empowerment, nutrition, self-image, and general teen issues, or as a co-leader for the Youth Leadership Program facilitating discussions and planning field trips around prevention and intervention topics as well as life management skills. All members will serve as leaders in both the Middle and High School academic programs empowering students to take charge of their academic careers and to help prepare them for college. Members will act as liaisons between the school and the center, help with volunteer recruitment, assist non-English speaking youth and families, and organize community service and civic engagement projects. Members will be a part of the Vera Court team!
In addition to providing service to youth at host sites, PASS members have the opportunity to participate in local service projects throughout the term, including a regional service trip planned by members over the MMSD spring break. Service to the community builds leadership skills, enhances civic engagement, develops camaraderie, and is just fun. PASS members have rebuilt retaining walls and hiking trails for the American Hiking Society in Missouri and provided fire and trail restoration at the Great Smokey Mountain National Park.
Locally, members have lead county-wide food drives for the Community Action Coalition to stock local pantries, harvested apples, cleaned the shores of Lake Monona, built trails for the Wisconsin Ice Age Alliance, and participated in reading events at area elementary schools.
