January marks the first days of the Dane County Department of Human Services officially including a Behavioral Health Division. This means that we will at last have all county-provided and county-funded services that address behavioral health needs across the lifespan within a single organizational unit of the department. To some, this might seem like a minor bureaucratic detail. But this reorganization of services that were previously parts of the Adult Community Services and the Prevention and Early Intervention Divisions, provides us with greater opportunity to deliver quality services to our neighbors who are on their own path to recovery. By working together within and across our units, we will be more efficient in meeting needs in the way Dane County communities expect.
Make no mistake, the work we will do in this division will be challenging, but it will be significant. We are hitting the ground running as we have many big projects we are working on right now. To name just a few, we are developing a Crisis Triage Center, revamping our mobile crisis response system, and sunsetting the groundbreaking Children Come First Program while at the same time developing a new service that will help children and their families who are in the midst of a crisis. We will also continue expansion of valuable programs like CCS and the BHRC in order to meet the ever-growing demand. We will continue to make sure that we and our contractors are implementing evidence-based practices in programs such as our Community Support Program (intensive case management program for those with serious and persistent mental illnesses), Drug Court, and substance use treatment. This only scratches the surface of all of the work our division will be doing every day.
We will be able to manage all that we have in front of us because our division is made up of a broad array of professionals who are dedicated to keeping people with behavioral health concerns at the center of our every decision. I am excited to be with you along the way and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together.
