Immigration Affairs Luncheon

12/16/2022

Immigration Affairs Supervisor, Fabiola Hamden

On December 16, the Immigration Affairs Office celebrated the work of our people in our community supporting the important work of immigration affairs. The work of these incredible individuals helps all seeking our services, in particular, new arrivals that are looking for Asylum. The Immigration Affairs Office works with people presenting with different legal statuses to help them understand and navigate the immigration process, address their basic human needs, and gain or maintain their legal status. Our office does this work with exemplary dedication, empathy, and respect. We celebrate diversity by respecting others’ beliefs, committing to assist, support, and advocate for immigrants and refugees. We collaborate with external agencies to provide universal representation, access to services, and advocacy for pro-immigrant policies. Additionally, we act as a key liaison on immigration initiatives involving community partners, healthcare providers, legal services, local government, elected officials, and law enforcement.

Recognition at the luncheon was given to four individuals: Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, Vice President/Chief Diversity Officer, Associate Dean for Diversity & Equity Transformation at UW Health. Ms. Bidar was recognized because since the Immigration Affairs office was created, her advocacy has included funding from UW Health. As an alder, she was strong advocate for undocumented people in Madison. Overall, she is just amazing. Kristina J. Rasmussen, Community Immigration Law Center, is a pro-bono attorney who helps vulnerable clients with DACA renewals, citizenship, adjustment of status, etc. She goes out of her way to accommodate the needs of our clients. Dan Zimmerman, Dane Sanctuary Coalition heads the Volunteer Driving Program and coordinates free transportation for our clients that have immigration appointments in Milwaukee and Chicago. Mary McNail volunteers at the Immigration Affairs Office helping families with basic needs, financial assistance, and goes out of her way to help children with homework, and extracurricular activities.
